Wind Down For Better Zzzs

Have you ever got into bed feeling tired but then been unable to get some much needed zzz’s?

Is your mind racing with to-do lists or the work emails that need answering? Or maybe you’re worrying about finances or health issues? Or has your day been so busy with work, kids and housework that the first time you’ve stopped is when you’ve hopped into bed?

You’re not alone. Today’s lifestyles are fast-paced and full of stimulation.

Often from the moment when we wake up and check our smart phones, life is non-stop. We put on the radio or television to be given the news as it happens and when it happens; we check our emails constantly throughout the day; we sit at our computers and/or watch television late into the evening. It barely stops and it can be difficult to switch off and wind down so it’s no wonder that many of us have trouble sleeping.

With this in mind, we wanted to find out what you did to wind down before bed and the results are below.

Interestingly just over a third of you wind down by doing something relaxing like reading a book, having a warm bath, listening to music or practising yoga or meditation. All really good ways of destressing.

Nearly a quarter of you use your phone, tablet or other gaming device in the evening. Try to avoid screen time at least an hour before going to bed – and that includes your TV! Not only do gadgets stimulate the brain but the blue light that emits from these devices suppresses the sleepy hormone, melatonin, which in turn makes you feel less sleepy and affects the time it takes for you to fall asleep.

As part of our Sleeptember campaign, which ran last month, we were actively encouraging people to make the time to wind down before bed. It really can make a huge difference to how you sleep. Indulging in some quality ‘me time’ for an hour before bed may seem a luxury, but it’s conducive to a good night’s sleep.
